EU Extends France’s Online Gambling Deadline
The European commission (EC) has extended the deadline for France to modify its restrictive online gambling legislation to October 29th 2007.
France, alongside other European countries such as Sweden, has been criticised by the EC for only allowing native gambling companies to thrive in the country and blocking other EU operators from entering its markets.
The EC is concerned that France is breaching article 49 of the European Treaty, which allows for a free market in the service sector within the EU, as the French government currently only permits two local gambling operators, PMU and Française des Jeux, to offer their services over the Internet.
The EC had originally demanded that France alter its gambling laws before the end of August 2007, to allow Internet providers to post a message informing players that they were about to enter a site that was not permitted in France. Those providers that don’t adhere to system would be fined €75,000.
