Swedish Police Raid Illegal Gambling Venues in Gothenburg
Police in Sweden raided 150 locations around the country earlier this week, making numerous arrests and seizing gambling paraphernalia.
Police raided cafes, bars and clubs in the cities of Gothenburg, Stockholm, Vasteras and Uppsala, seizing up to 300 illegal gaming machines and arresting many people on suspicion of illicit gambling and various breaches of Sweden's gaming laws.
'A large number of people have been arrested and questioned,' said Malin Sahlstrom, a police spokesperson.
Although online gambling was not a specific target of the raid, police and prosecutors stated that the Tax Board, the National Economic Crimes Bureau and the Gaming Board had helped them in their investigations, which they described as the largest ever of their kind.
'I don't want to go into the exact number but at least ten people are suspected of tax offences, false accounting offences and obstruction of tax checks,' said Christina Greiner, Chief Prosecutor for the National Economic Crimes Bureau.
