Unibet Team Reaches Its Last Cycle
Members of the Unibet.com cycling team have decided to go their separate ways at the end of 2007 after the online gambling giant, and the team's main sponsor, withdrew all funding.
The decision by the Swedish gambling firm, which has over 1 million customers, comes at the end of a prolonged dispute with French race organizers, who declined the team an invitation due to France's veto on all foreign gambling advertising.
'We expected it. The riders are free to look for a job with other teams,' team general manager Koen Terryn told the VRT news network on Wednesday.
Unibet.com was blocked from entering this year's Tour de France as well as the Paris-Nice road race.
The Unibet team had received strong backing from the International Cycling Union (ICU) and European Union regulators, but both failed to impact the position of French organisers.
